Livestock farming is a vital agricultural sector, offering material benefits such as food, raw materials, and stall manure. In Kosova, it encompasses diverse areas like cattle farming, dairy farming, pig farming, and sheep farming, as well as beekeeping, promising growth and opportunity.
In 2024, the country had 240,848 head of cattle, representing 46.0% of the total livestock population. Meanwhile, sheep and goats accounted for 45.3%, while pigs and other animals made up the remaining 8.7%.
According to the official data from the 2024 Agricultural Holdings Survey, the structure of the livestock sector in Kosovo shows a balanced distribution among the main animal categories, reflecting the importance of this sector in national agricultural production.
In 2024, the structure of livestock in Kosovo, measured through Livestock Units (LSU), is dominated by cattle, which account for 82.9% of the total LSU, followed by sheep and goats with 10.6%, pigs with 5.9%, and equines with 0.6%. This structure clearly reflects the productive weight of the cattle sector, particularly dairy cows, in the country’s livestock economy.
In 2024, the total livestock population reached 523,451 head.
